Stress 101: Stress Management Information You Need to Know

Many people struggle daily with the burden of stress. Perhaps you have an idea of what stress is, but you don’t know the specific stressors in your life. Read below for more stress management information you need.

What is Stress?

One key piece of stress management information that you will want to arm yourself with is a definition. One definition of stress is “a state of mental or emotional strain or suspense.” Stress occurs when we are presented with a situation that causes us fear, anxiety, or trepidation. Humans, just like animals do, have chemicals that are released during times of stress. These chemicals in animals cause them to react physically. They either fight back their stressor, or they flee it. Humans are rarely in the situation to physically fight or flee. Stress typically dealt with emotionally and is often mishandled. Having this stress management information will help when evaluating the ways in which you react to stress.

Typical Ways People Handle Stress

In addition to knowing what stress is, another essential bit of stress management information you need to know about yourself is how you handle stress. People handle stress in a variety of ways. Some people eat, drink, or watch more and more television. Some pace, wring their hands or pick at things such as scabs. Most of these methods of handling stress are mere distractions and ways of avoiding the problem as opposed to working through it. These methods and distractions are often create unhealthy habits and do not allow us to release the stress.

Healthy Ways to Handle Stress

Other bits of stress management information you need to know are the good ways of handling stress. There are several healthy ways of dealing with stress. The first is to acknowledge the problem and work toward fixing it. This is considered action-oriented, in which the stressor is eliminated or changed. When that is not possible, one still needs to work through the emotions that stem from stress in an emotionally-oriented approach toward stress. Letting out energy though journaling, reading, exercising, yoga, or meditation can help you manage stress levels. This approach allows you to rearrange the stressor in your mind and thus alter the way you perceive it. Sometimes, people reach a point where stress cannot be changed nor do we have the emotional control we need in the situation. At this point, we must simply accept it and focus on riding out the storm.
