How to Cope with Family Stress Management

Many an observer has been puzzled why there are some families that are able to tide over floods, natural disasters or financial difficulties without showing any side effects while other families go under in such circumstances. There may be more to it than meets the eye and it may be due to interplay of many variables that determine what the family is able to cope with when faced with stressors or when encountering problems.

These variables could be hardships associated with the condition, how a situation is perceived, the presence of inner resources in a person or his or her coping capacity and the external resources as well as support that a person is able to mobilize. Perception is however a key variable that is a powerful variable that may be able to explain family stress and the study of which should form an integral part of family stress management.

Stress Response and How One Perceives Information

Perception may be thought of as more than the world of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell and may be thought of as being the way humans get data and how they make sense or derive meaning from it. What are the things that go on in the mind and body that act as triggers to start the stress response? To begin with, one must understand that there has to be a situation or event that is considered as being unpleasant or threatening. To help in family stress management one should talk out the problem or worries with someone and from their views and experiences, one may get a clearer perspective and thus find relief from stress.

There are many other causes for family stress including bills, spousal relationships and household chores. Other stressors include a fire or death within the family that contribute in no small measure to family stress and for which one is in need of family stress management. This therapy may involve not avoiding discussions and in case it is a problem that is causing stress to one member of the family there is every chance that it would act as a stressor on every family member as well. One should talk things over to help find a solution.

Another family stress management method is to not trivialize issues and even if the problem is insignificant it should be acted upon in a timely manner. Other family stress management tips are not to lay blame on others and to also respect other family members’ privacy.
